Sile
Sile is a settlement area history of which goes back until 12000-6000 BC. The word "Sile" originally comes from Greek language which means sweet marjoram. This beautifully scented herb grows on hills and ridges of mountains.
Sile is one of 32 administrational districts of
Istanbul. It is situated on the North-west part of Turkey, at the north-east of
Marmara region, in Catalca-Kocaeli section, on the
Black Sea coast of
Kocaeli peninsula. Sile is sourrounded by Kandira on the east, Gebze on the south, Kartal and Umraniye on the south-west,
Beykoz on the west and
Black Sea on the North. The district covers an area of 736 Km square.
Sile is 55 Km away from Istanbul. All of its villages are reachable by tarmac or gravel roads.
Although the population according to the last census held in 2000 is 10,800, during summer months, the population in the district increases to 100,000-150,000 and to 300,000 at the weekends.
Sile has many hotels.And it has some beaches for tourists.It is one of the attractive summer places in
Asian side of
Istanbul.It is famous for its textile ,Sile fabric.
